Common auto electrical jobs in Scarness

Scarness has been a holiday spot since the railway reached it, and it still has a foreshore caravan park, the jetty and a boat ramp. Add the rail trail on the old railway line and a lot of long-time residents, and the job list looks different from the town centre next door.

Caravans that arrive with a flat house battery

Plenty of travellers pull into the foreshore caravan park after a long day on the road and find the van's battery hasn't charged on the way. The usual causes are a thin charging wire from the car, a blown fuse or circuit breaker, a smart alternator that drops its voltage, or a worn pin in the plug. A voltage test at the van's battery with the engine running quickly shows which. Our guide on why a caravan battery isn't charging while towing explains each cause.

Bike racks for the rail trail

The rail trail follows the old railway line through Scarness towards Pialba and Urangan, and lots of people bring their bikes on a towbar-mounted carrier. If the rack or bikes hide your tail lights, indicators or number plate, you need a light board that plugs into the trailer socket. A loose board or a corroded socket pin often makes one side work and the other not. Check every light with someone watching before you head off, not after you've been flashed by another driver.

Charging faults on older cars

Many Scarness residents drive a well-kept older car that does modest kilometres. Alternators on these cars rarely die without warning. Dimming lights at idle, a whine that rises with engine speed, or a battery light that flickers on and off are the early signs. A charging test takes a few minutes and tells you whether it's the alternator, the belt or a loose connection. Our guide on the battery warning light coming on while driving explains what to do in the moment.

Indicators that flash fast after an LED swap

Swapping old indicator globes for LEDs is a popular upgrade, but on many older cars the indicators then flash twice as fast. The flasher unit reads the lower current draw of an LED as a blown globe. The fix is either a load resistor, which gets hot and must be mounted on metal, or an LED-compatible flasher relay. On newer cars the body computer may need settings changed. Our guide on why indicators flash fast covers each option.

Small boats off the Scarness ramp

The boat ramp on the Scarness foreshore suits tinnies and small runabouts, often on light trailers that get little attention between trips. Cheap plugs and unsealed joints in the trailer wiring corrode quickly after a few dunks. Fitting a sealed plug, joining wires with heat-shrink connectors and rinsing the plug with fresh water after each launch keeps the lights reliable. Keep the car's own socket capped when the trailer isn't connected, as it sits low and catches spray.

Scarness auto electrical questions

My caravan's fridge works on 240V at the park but not while we drive. Why?

On the road most three-way fridges run from the car through a separate heavy-current wire in the plug. If that circuit has no power, the fridge stays warm while you drive even though it works fine on mains power at the park. Common causes are a blown fuse, an ignition-controlled relay that isn't switching or a corroded pin. A quick voltage test at the plug narrows it down.

Do I need a light board if my bike rack only covers part of the number plate?

If any of your number plate, tail lights, brake lights or indicators can't be seen clearly, you should fit a light board with its own number plate. Bikes on a rack often block more than you expect, especially from a following driver's eye height. Stand a few metres behind the car to check. A light board plugs into the trailer socket, so the car needs working towbar wiring.

Local tip for Scarness

If you're visiting Scarness with a caravan, do a five-minute check on the first morning before you drive anywhere. Test the van battery voltage, look at the plug pins for green or white crust and make sure the breakaway brake battery is charged. A small problem found at the park is easy to sort out. The same problem found halfway to your next stop is not.
