Howard and Torbanlea are the main towns, both started by coal mining, with farms, bush blocks and the river all around them. Towns in the Burrum District
Howard and Torbanlea face each other across the Burrum River, about 5 km apart, and were once known as twin towns. Coal was mined here from the 1800s, and a power station ran on local coal until 1980. Today the Bruce Highway bypasses both town centres, Howard has the district's shops and a big monthly country market, and Torbanlea is home to a new train manufacturing facility. The coastal towns of Burrum Heads and Toogoom are a short drive east. That mix means highway work, farm and bush vehicles, boats on the river and work utes for local industry.

Common auto electrical jobs in the Burrum District
The highway, the river and a lot of country driving shape most of the auto electrical work around Howard and Torbanlea.
Bruce Highway travellers
The Bruce Highway runs past both towns, carrying trucks, caravans and holiday traffic between Brisbane and the north. Charging faults, failed trailer lights and flat batteries after a night at a rest area are common. If you are towing, check your lights and plug before you set off, and look at the battery voltage on a long day. Our guide on the battery warning light while driving explains what to do if it comes on.

Boats on the Burrum River
The Burrum River has a council boat ramp at Howard, and the river mouth at Burrum Heads opens onto the Great Sandy Strait. Every launch puts trailer lights and wiring under water, and brackish or salt water eats unsealed plugs and globes quickly. Sealed LED lights, tinned cable and a fresh plug every few seasons save a lot of trouble.

Farm, bush and work vehicles
Away from the town centres, a lot of driving is on farm tracks and dirt roads at dawn and dusk. Dust and vibration loosen connectors, and good lighting matters when wildlife is about. With new industry at Torbanlea, work utes are also getting beacons, reversing cameras and extra lighting. Have the wiring done to a fused circuit so it doesn't drain the battery.
