Common auto electrical jobs in Urangan

Urangan is Hervey Bay's largest suburb by population and its working waterfront. The boat harbour is home to the whale watching fleet and a gateway to the Great Sandy Marine Park and K'gari, so marine and touring work is a big part of the mix.

Boat trailers after a season of launches

Trailers launched at Urangan Boat Harbour spend part of every trip in salt water. The usual damage is predictable: green pins in the plug, corroded globe holders, broken earth wires and lights that work one week and not the next. Submersible LED lights and heat-shrink joints last much longer. Unplug before you back down the ramp, so a hot globe doesn't hit cold water. Our guide to why trailer lights stop working walks through the checks.

Coming home from K'gari

A few days of beach driving on K'gari leaves salt spray and fine sand everywhere, including in plugs, switches and the alternator. Parks Queensland warns that salt air and spray can corrode vehicles. Electrical faults can show up weeks later as intermittent lights, a noisy alternator or a winch that won't pull. A thorough underbody wash soon after you get back helps, but keep high-pressure water away from plugs, fuse boxes and the alternator itself.

Dual batteries for island trips

Most K'gari camping trips involve a fridge running for days, plus lights, phones and maybe a water pump. A second battery charged by a DC-DC charger keeps that load away from your starting battery. Newer 4WDs with smart alternators usually need a DC-DC charger rather than a simple isolator. Mount the battery securely, because inland sand tracks shake everything. Our guide to DC-DC chargers and isolators compares the two.

Winches and Anderson plugs

Winches draw very high current, so cable size, fuses and connections matter. In Urangan the extra enemy is salt. Anderson plugs at the front bar and rear of the vehicle sit right where spray and wet sand hit them. A dust cap, regular cleaning and a dab of contact grease keep them working. If a winch slows down or cuts out, check the battery, cable lugs and solenoid before blaming the motor.

Tour, hire and airport vehicles

With the airport in the south-west of the suburb and tours leaving from the harbour, Urangan has its share of hire cars, minibuses and tour vehicles. These cars stop and start all day, sit in the sun between runs and carry extra gear. Batteries, central locking, interior lights and reversing cameras get worked hard. Operators often book regular checks so a fault is found before it costs a day of bookings.

Urangan auto electrical questions

Should I wash my 4WD's engine bay after a trip to K'gari?

Rinsing salt off the underbody and wheel arches soon after you get back is worth doing. The engine bay needs more care. A gentle rinse with low pressure, keeping water off the alternator, fuse box and plugs, is safer than a pressure wash. Let it dry with the bonnet up. If you see corrosion on terminals or connectors, clean and protect them rather than just washing.

Why do my boat trailer lights keep failing after launching at Urangan?

Hot incandescent globes can crack when they hit cold water, and salt gets into globe holders, earths and plug pins. Sealed LED lights handle dunking much better. Unplugging the trailer before you reverse down the ramp also helps. If one side keeps failing, the earth is often the culprit, so run a dedicated earth wire rather than relying on the trailer frame.

Can a dual battery be fitted before I catch the barge?

Usually, if you plan ahead. A good install takes time, especially if the battery goes in the tub or canopy and needs cable runs, fuses and a DC-DC charger. Book a few weeks before your trip. Ask for a test run so you can watch the second battery charge while driving and confirm the fridge runs overnight before you leave.

Local tip for Urangan

Keep a small kit in the 4WD for the trip back from K'gari: a few spare fuses, cable ties, electrical tape, contact cleaner and a multimeter. Most electrical problems after beach driving are a dirty or loose connection, and being able to clean a plug at the barge landing can save a ruined weekend. Wash the vehicle soon after you get back, not next week.
