Common auto electrical jobs in The Pocket

The Pocket is a traditional neighbourhood name within Maryborough, not a separate locality. It sits between the city centre and the river near the Granville Bridge, and its old riverside rail line once ran to the sugar factory. Short distances and river air shape the work here.

Hybrids that won't switch on

Hybrids suit short town trips, but they bring a fault that surprises owners. The big high-voltage battery doesn't start the car on its own. A small 12V battery powers up the computers first, and if it's flat, nothing happens. Short trips in The Pocket are hard on that small battery. Testing and replacing the 12V battery is normal auto electrical work, but anything on the high-voltage side is for licensed professionals only.

Smart alternators and the right battery

Many newer cars use a smart alternator that charges the battery only when it suits fuel economy. Combined with short trips into the city centre, that can leave the battery under-charged a lot of the time. When the battery is replaced, these cars often need the right type, usually AGM or EFB, and sometimes need it registered with a scan tool. Fitting the wrong battery can shorten its life. See what a smart alternator is.

Damp river air and corrosion

With water on three sides, The Pocket gets humid air off the Mary River. Cars parked outside can get moisture into connectors, especially plugs under the car, in the doors and around the tail lights. The result is intermittent faults: a light that flickers, a sensor warning that comes and goes. Cleaning connectors and using a little dielectric grease on exposed plugs helps. Our guide to cleaning corroded battery terminals is a good place to start.

Adding accessories the right way

Phone chargers, dashcams and extra USB points are popular in cars that do lots of short trips around town. Plugging many devices into one cigarette socket can overload it, and cheap adapters often fail or get hot. If you're adding a permanent socket, run it from a fused supply that switches off with the ignition. Getting the fuse size and placement right protects the wiring. Our guide on where to put the fuse when wiring an accessory explains it.

The Pocket auto electrical questions

My hybrid won't start but the big battery should be fine. What's wrong?

Most often it's the small 12V battery. It wakes up the car's computers, and without it the hybrid system won't switch on. A jump start on the 12V side, done exactly as the owner's manual describes, usually gets it going. Have the 12V battery tested afterwards. Never open or work on the orange high-voltage cables or parts.

Do I need a special battery for my newer car?

Many newer cars, especially those with stop-start or a smart alternator, need an AGM or EFB battery, not a standard one. The owner's manual or the label on the old battery will tell you. Some cars also need the new battery registered with a scan tool so the charging system treats it correctly. Getting it right gives a longer battery life.

Local tip for The Pocket

If you live in The Pocket and mostly walk into town, your car may only do a few kilometres a week. That's hard on any battery, and harder on a hybrid's 12V battery. Once a fortnight, take a 30-minute drive out along the highway, or keep a smart charger on it. Both keep the battery healthy.
