Tiaro

The Tiaro district covers the farms, forests and small towns along the Bruce Highway and the Mary River south of Maryborough. Most auto electrical work here comes from long highway kilometres, farm utes and machinery, towing, and vehicles that work hard on gravel and forestry roads.

Suburbs in Tiaro

Tiaro sits where the Bruce Highway crosses the Mary River, about 26 km south-west of Maryborough. Owanyilla and Glenorchy line the highway to the north, with cane and grazing country either side. West of the river, Mungar Road links Antigua, Pioneers Rest and Yerra. South, Netherby and Bauple run grazing and cane country towards Mount Bauple, while Talegalla Weir and Tuan Forest run east into timbered blocks and pine plantation. Highway towns see travellers and commuters, while the back roads bring farm machinery, trailers and vehicles shaken about on gravel.

Common auto electrical jobs in Tiaro

A highway town, a big river and a lot of rural country give the Tiaro district a mix of work you won't see in Hervey Bay or central Maryborough.

Heat, holiday queues and the Bruce

The Bruce Highway still runs straight through Tiaro, and in peak holiday periods traffic can back up for kilometres. Sitting in a slow queue on a hot day is hard on a vehicle: the air conditioning, cooling fans and headlights all run while the alternator turns at idle speed. An older battery or a tired alternator often gives up in exactly these conditions. If your temperature gauge climbs or the air conditioning blows warm in traffic, have the fans and charging system checked. Our guide to common car air conditioning problems covers the usual causes.

Wet seasons and the Mary River

The highway through Tiaro has three known flood zones, and when the Mary River rises the town can be cut off with no detour. Locals know not to drive through floodwater, but even shallow water on a farm crossing can push into plugs, sensors and the starter motor. Problems often appear days later as warning lights, a failed reversing light or a car that cranks slowly. If your vehicle has been in water, get the connectors and earths checked before small corrosion turns into an expensive fault.

Floats, crates and farm trailers

Grazing and cropping run right through the district, so plenty of utes tow cattle crates, horse floats, tipping trailers and car trailers. Heavier trailers need brakes, and once they're over 2,000 kg those brakes must be operable from the driver's seat, which usually means an electric brake controller. A controller only works properly with good wiring, a solid earth and the right gain setting for the load. See our guide on installing an electric brake controller before you start.

Corrugations on forestry and gravel roads

Large parts of the district are state forest and pine plantation, and many properties are reached by gravel roads. Hours of corrugations shake terminals loose, crack old solder joints and rub wiring where it passes through the firewall or under the tray. The result is a fault that comes and goes: flickering dash lights, an accessory that cuts out, or a car that won't start until you thump the battery. Checking clamps, adding grommets and tying looms off properly prevents most of it.
